North Bay youth get a free ticket to ride public transit this June, July, and August 2023. The Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit District (SMART), Marin Transit, Sonoma County Transit, Santa Rosa CityBus, and Petaluma Transit are offering free rides for K-12 youth throughout the summer season with the Summer Youth Ride Free Program.

Santa Rosa offering discounted parking permit for SMART rail commuters
City of Santa Rosa offering discounted parking permit for SMART rail commuters City of Santa Rosa offering discounted parking permit for SMART rail commuters Santa Rosa, CA—The City of Santa Rosa is expanding its Commuter Parking Permit program to support commuter use of Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit District (SMART). The pilot expansion will offer a discounted Commuter Parking Permit for parking located within close walking distance from SMART’s Santa Rosa Downtown Station. Discounted Commuter Parking Permits are currently available in the First Street Garage adjacent to the Transit Mall and Lot 14 at Fifth and Morgan streets. This pilot program will run through July 1, 2024 and will offer a maximum of 20 permits. Monthly rates have been reduced from $50 to $31 for rail transit riders using the Santa Rosa Downtown Station as the starting point of their trip. The Commuter Parking permit may be obtained for Lot 14 at Fifth Street and Morgan, and Garage 12 at First Street, adjacent to the Downtown Transit Mall Lot 14 lot is located under the Highway 101 overpass and is less than a five-minute walk from the SMART station. In addition, commuters and other travelers can park for up to 72 hours in this parking lot. To receive this discount for Lot 14 or Garage 12, train riders and other commuters must submit verification of Clipper account usage of at least $25 per month to the Santa Rosa Parking Office at 90 Santa Rosa Ave, Santa Rosa, to obtain the discounted parking pass. SMART will operate non-passenger service trips this weekend for ongoing training and certification
Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations require ongoing training and certification for SMART’s train engineers. To comply with these regulations, SMART Operations crews will perform training operations this weekend, Saturday, April 25, and Sunday, April 26, from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Passengers Are Required to Wear Facial Coverings When Riding SMART

Law Enforcement Agencies to Join SMART in Promoting Rail Safety
As part of National Rail Safety Week, September 22-28, North Bay law enforcement agencies will be partnering with SMART to reinforce safe behaviors near trains, tracks and at railroad crossings. Police officers will be actively patrolling railroad crossings, in San Rafael, Novato, Petaluma, Rohnert Park, Cotati, and Santa Rosa.

Free Rides and Regional Park Entry For Veterans and Active Duty Military Personnel
Sonoma County, Marin County and the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) District are partnering to provide veterans, and active duty military personnel and their families with free train service and free entry to county parks during the Memorial Day weekend. The free train service and free parks entry begins Saturday, May 25, through Monday, May 27, with a valid military identification card, or Veterans Administration identification card.

SMART recommended to receive for $12.6 million grant for bicycle and pedestrian pathway
The Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) District was recommended to receive a $12.6 million grant to fund its bicycle and pedestrian pathway project in Petaluma, Rohnert Park and Santa Rosa. The Metropolitan Transportation Commission’s (MTC) staff recommended SMART as a recipient for the regional grant, which is expected to go to the full Commission in February.

SMART Set to Reach 1 Million Passenger Mark
The Bay Area’s newest transit system will reach an important milestone this week: Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) will surpass its 1 million-passenger mark in just over a year of service. SMART ridership statistics show that the transit agency will reach the million-rider mark by the end of this week, officials said. SMART train riders who are onboard on that special day could be among the 1,500 riders who will receive passes for free train trips, SMART officials said.

SMART Receives Transit/Rail Project of the Year Award
The Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) District received top honors as Transit/Rail Project of the Year from the California Transportation Foundation (CTF) during an awards ceremony held May 24, 2018 in Orange County. The award recognizes excellence in California transportation projects in 2017. SMART was selected from a field of seven statewide nominees.

Service Advisory
On Saturday, October 19, the SB 7:23 p.m. out of the Sonoma County Airport station and NB 8:50 p.m. out of the San Rafael station will be canceled to accommodate pre-revenue operations for the Larkspur Extension.
Systems Testing Update

Road Closure Notice: Andersen Drive
Beginning on Monday, February 26, Andersen Drive in San Rafael will be closed from Du Bois St. to Francisco Blvd. to facilitate the construction of the Andersen Drive railroad crossing, as a part of SMART's construction of the Larkspur rail extension. Andersen Drive will be closed for approximately 3 months, with the road being closed 24/7. SMART receives $21 million for its extension to Windsor
The Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) District received $21 million in state transportation funds to construct the extension to Windsor. This grant, coupled with the proposed $40 million in funding from Regional Measure 3 (RM3), will allow SMART to complete the first of three northern Sonoma County extensions.

SMART secures funding from the Federal Transit Administration for the Larkspur extension
SMART was awarded a $22.5 million grant by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Federal Transit Administration (FTA) today for the Larkspur extension. The funds will be used to complete the 2.1-mile extension connecting SMART’s San Rafael Station to Golden Gate Transit’s Larkspur Ferry terminal, an important link between San Francisco and the North Bay.
Freight Operator to conduct Positive Train Control testing in Rohnert Park
Freight operator Northwestern Pacific Railroad Company, which has been testing its Positive Train Control (PTC) system to meet Federal Railroad Administration requirements, will begin testing in the Rohnert Park area Friday, April 6, 2018.

Construction Notice: PG&E Work for Larkspur Extension
As part of the construction project to build the Larkspur rail extension, Pacific Gas & Electric will soon begin work to relocate electrical conduit and a transformer in the San Rafael Transit Center.
Service Update: Trains Are Back on Schedule
Trains are now back on schedule. Thank you for your patience. SMART trains had experienced delays earlier today due to an incident involving a woman struck by a train near Hearn Ave. in Santa Rosa. The Santa Rosa Police department is investigating the incident as an apparent suicide. Please know there is help available by calling the North Bay Suicide Prevention Hotline at (855) 587-6373 or the Sonoma County Mental Health Crisis Line at (800) 870-8786.
SMART Awarded $10.5 Million in Senate Bill 1 Funding
The Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) District was awarded $10.5 million in funding Tuesday, January 30, 2018 which will be used for operating its new passenger train service. The funding, which will be distributed over a three-year period, is administered by the California State Transportation Agency as part of the State Rail Assistance program and is funded by Senate Bill 1 (SB 1). SMART was among seven recipients to receive a portion of the $51.9 million in rail assistance funding.

Get Your Senior Clipper Card in Rohnert Park
SMART is distributing senior Clipper cards at the Rohnert Park Senior Center, located at 6800 Hunter Drive, Suite A, on Tuesday, October 31st from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. SMART riders with a senior Clipper card receive a 50 percent discount on SMART fares and 31-Day Pass.
Service Update: SMART Continues Free Service Through Friday
SMART will run on a regular schedule, with 34 weekday trips, with southbound service starting at 4:19 a.m. out of the Sonoma County Airport station, and northbound service beginning at 5:59 a.m. out of San Rafael. Service will continue mid-day, through the peak commute, and into the evening with the last southbound train departing the Sonoma County Airport station at 6:49 p.m. and the last northbound train departing San Rafael at 8:35 p.m.

A bicyclist was struck by a southbound train Thursday afternoon at W. Steele Ln and Coffey Ln. in Santa Rosa.
Service Alert: Northbound Trains Delayed Monday Due to a Car on the Tracks in Petaluma
A car drove onto the railroad tracks at Washington Boulevard in Petaluma Monday night, delaying train service in the area. A tow truck was called and the car was removed. Serviced resumed as scheduled. Thank you for your patience. Your safety is our top priority. Please remember to be alert and aware at all railroad tracks and crossings.
Service Update: San Rafael Station Re-opened
The San Rafael station was re-opened Friday at 7 p.m. after being temporarily closed due to a natural gas leak. Service has resumed as scheduled.
Motorist Breaks Crossing Gate in Petaluma
At approximately 7:25 p.m. Tuesday, a vehicle went through the crossing gate at Corona Road in Petaluma and broke the gate, and left the scene. The approaching train used the emergency brake and proceeded through the intersection at slower speeds.

SMART Trains Run 28 Free Trips Tuesday
Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) will operate on a limited schedule Tuesday, October 10, as a result of extreme fire conditions in Sonoma and Marin counties. SMART service will continue to be free of charge Tuesday to assist those in the area who need transportation options during this period.
Service Update: SMART resumes limited emergency service
Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) will offer limited emergency service between downtown Santa Rosa and downtown San Rafael today, October 9. SMART inspected tracks and equipment and will begin limited service at 2:31 p.m. from the Santa Rosa downtown station to downtown San Rafael, serving all stations in between. Trains will run both southbound and northbound. (See schedule below).
Update: Morning Service Canceled Due to Fires
SMART has canceled morning service as a result of extreme fire conditions. SMART is monitoring conditions and working to resume service where possible as safety allows. The fires are causing poor visibility due to heavy smoke, and multiple SMART railroad crossings in north Santa Rosa have also been closed to assist in the evacuation of the area. Safety is our top priority and we will monitor fire conditions and resume service as safety allows.
Update on Train Horns in San Rafael
The Smith Ranch Road and San Rafael Airport crossings are functioning properly. SMART will not need to use the horn in that area, unless there is an emergency. SMART will temporarily continue to use safety flaggers this week as a safety precaution. Thank you for your patience.

SMART receives final approval
The Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) District announced today that it has received the green light from the Federal Railroad Administration to begin full passenger train service. Service will begin on August 25.

The Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) District will soon announce the date for its service launch. Once service begins, SMART will open with a free introductory period for a limited time, followed by 50 percent discounted rates through the September 4 Labor Day holiday. Regular fares will go into effect on September 5.
SAFETY ADVISORY: Santa Rosa Quiet Zone in Effect
SMART received notification that Santa Rosa's Quiet Zone will take effect beginning Wednesday, June 7.
SAFETY ADVISORY: Petaluma Quiet Zone in Effect
The Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) District received notification that Petaluma’s Quiet Zone will take effect beginning Wednesday, May 24. Once Quiet Zones are established, SMART trains will no longer use horns at railroad crossings in those areas, unless there is an emergency. Please use caution near all railroad crossings and near all tracks and trains. Petaluma joins Novato, San Rafael and the County of Marin, on the list of jurisdictions that have established Quiet Zones. SMART anticipates other jurisdictions will also establish Quiet Zones throughout the 43-mile initial route.
